Your friend is getting married, and she has asked you to be a bridesmaid. She is giving you a special honor and a touching compliment. The bridesmaids are usually those closest to the bride, her close family members and her best friends. You want to show your support and appreciation to her by being there when she needs you and helping make her day special and stress free.
What is Your Role?
The role of the bridesmaid can vary slightly depending on the bride’s needs, and how traditional the ceremony is going to be. The Head Maid or Matron of Honor has most of the roles in assisting with wedding planning and during the wedding day festivities. As a bridesmaid, however, you do have your role as well. You will be standing in the wedding party with your friend or family member. You will also have things to do leading up to the big day.
First, you will help the bride shop for her wedding dress and the bridesmaid’s dresses. It is very important that you offer your input about color and style preferences, especially if a style or color does not work for you or indeed your Bride. Some people look pale wearing certain shades of pink, red, or orange. You want to look beautiful on the big day because your beauty will help enhance and add to the bride’s beauty. Be honest with the bride about the dresses that she tries on as well. She may have her sights on something elegant, but if it does not look perfect on her, she will not be happy on her big day.
You will also assist with different aspects of planning the wedding. When asked, offer your input on decorations, colors, music, and favors. If you happen to know that the kids are enjoying certain types of party favors, let the bride know. Flower girl gifts and gifts for the pageboys are important, and meaningful gifts they will enjoy will give them lasting memories of the day.
Be ready to help the Maid of Honor plan the bridal shower and Hen Party. You may be asked to chip in for expenses for either event. If you are able to assist, be sure to save money aside for those events as well as your own gift for the bride. If you cannot assist financially, ask the Maid of Honor what else you can do to chip in instead. She will appreciate it and you will feel like an active part of the wedding planning.
At the wedding reception, be social. Speak to as many guests as you can, help introduce people, and guide guests to the guest book and be ready to help with the special moments, such as the cake cutting. Do not forget you will have an important role before the ceremony as well. You will help get the bride ready for her day and keep her calm. It is also a good idea to assist the Maid of Honor in making sure the bride remembers to eat, as many forget that in the excitement of the day.
The bride has given you a big honor and shown you how special you are by including you as an active participant in one of the most important days of her life. Enjoy your role as bridesmaid. Be there for your friend and most importantly, enjoy the excitement and the festivities.
